Training

Dr John McHugh received his undergraduate medical degree from University College Dublin in 2000. He completed specialist training in adult Neurology in Dublin before training in adult and paediatric Clinical Neurophysiology. He completed an MD thesis on the subject of peripheral nerve excitability testing. John completed his training in Clinical Neurophysiology in the Royal Free Hospital (London), the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square (London) and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

Experience

Dr McHugh worked as a Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, before returning to Dublin in 2012 to take a Consultant post in Clinical Neurophysiology in CHI-Crumlin and in Tallaght University Hospital. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the Academic Neurology Unit of Trinity College, Dublin, and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medicine with the RCSI. He is a former Dean of the Irish Institute of Clinical Neuroscience, and in October 2024 was appointed National Specialty Director for Higher Specialist Training in Clinical Neurophysiology by the Royal College of Physicians in Irelan
