Update on Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) audit recommendations and actions, October 2025
This information will be updated on the first Friday of each month.
Multi-Disciplinary Team review clinics in CHI have started
- The DDH Audit recommended a clinical review of patients who had osteotomy surgery in CHI at Temple Street and Cappagh.
- This is a once-off review to assess complications only and to determine current clinical state. After this, patients enter the recommended normal follow up process.
- CHI has extended the scope of this review to all children who had this type of surgery in CHI at Temple Street dating back to 2010.
- The clinic is structured as a one-stop Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) model for assessment, and includes consultation with a doctor, a physiotherapy assessment, an x-ray (if clinically indicated), immediate documentation of findings and further referral if required.
Data (current as of 10/25):
- Appointments offered: 358
- Patients booked: 242 patients
- Patients seen: 230 patients*
*Some families took the option to cancel their appointment for various personal reasons. These appointments will be rescheduled at their convenience.
Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings in CHI have started
- Since March 2025, any child who is listed for a hip surgery within CHI, is now discussed at a new cross-site Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting prior to surgery, so that all children and young people who come to CHI for care will receive the same standard and care across our hospitals.
- All surgeons who perform hip surgeries in Children’s Health Ireland, are a part of this MDT.
- This MDT is currently supported by two international experts who will observe and participate in the meetings.
It’s important to us that children, young people and their families are at the heart of our communication, and with this in mind, CHI met with the Hip Dysplasia Advocacy group on Saturday the 20th of September specifically about communications. CHI is continuing to engage with the Hip Dysplasia Advocacy Group in relation to the information being provided to families to ensure it is clear, relevant, and supportive.
