Ár Seirbhísí

The Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service in CHI provides specialised supports for patients aged 13+ who have a cancer diagnosis. International research shows that AYAs experience challenges related to cancer differently to their paediatric and adult counterparts; these challenges include:

  • Accessing clinical trials
  • Fertility considerations
  • Transition to survivorship care
  • Psychosocial support
  • Progression with life goals and pursuits

The AYA Cancer Service strives to give patients access to a broad range of developmentally appropriate supports that are tailored to the young person’s specific needs, including links to extra peer supports outside of a clinical setting.

National AYA Cancer MDM

CHI hosts the National AYA Cancer MDM, which is chaired by our two AYA Consultants. The MDM takes place weekly on alternating Tuesdays and Wednesdays 1-2pm, via Microsoft Teams (with the option to attend in-person at CHI Crumlin on Tuesdays). The AYA Cancer MDM discussion is a complementary youth focused discussion, which occurs in addition to the local site-specific MDM.

The purpose of this MDM is to ensure that all AYA cancer patients have equitable access to the following:

  • Comprehensive personalised care
  • A holistic health needs assessment to help guide their management.
  • Developmentally appropriate care
  • Planning/confirmation of evidence-based management for each patient, in collaboration with the treating hospital
  • Psychological oncology services
  • Fertility preservation
  • Education and career development support
  • Palliative care (where appropriate)

The AYA Cancer MDM is also an important forum for continuing education of staff.

Please see Healthcare Professionals' section for details of how to refer to the MDM.

Referrals are welcome from any location across the country. Any health professional who is treating an AYA with cancer can make a referral, or request to attend the MDM.

The AYA MDM co-ordinator will get in touch to confirm the date of MDM discussion for your patient and provide a link for meeting attendance.
We ask that you attend the meeting to present the patient that you are referring (you can attend the meeting virtually).
