Paediatric dermatology is a branch of medicine that deals with skin, hair, nail and mucosal problems in children from birth to adolescence.

Conditions we treat

Some common and rare skin problems can affect children. One in five children is affected by atopic dermatitis, and a diverse range of more than 2,500 dermatological diseases are less frequently encountered.

FAQs

High-tech medications are specialist treatments prescribed electronically by the Dermatology team. These should be renewed at clinic. Please remember to ask at your appointment if you need a repeat prescription. If phoning between appointments, please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for renewals due to prescription volumes. For this prescription, you must include: patient’s name, date of birth, hospital number, PPS number, name of the medication, dose and how often, name and email of pharmacy. Please contact the dermatology admin team (above) to submit the request.

First you will check in at the reception desk, confirming your child’s name and details. You will then take a seat in the waiting area until called by the clinic nurse who will check your child’s weight and height. You will then take a seat in the waiting area until called by the doctor. All new patients are offered a full skin examination. You may also meet other members of the multi-disciplinary team (advanced nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, researchers, medical students), as required.

All Referrals for Dermatology at Children's Health Ireland are managed by our Central Referrals Office. Referrals from GPs and Secondary Care Paediatricians are accepted via Healthlink or by email at chireferrals.ly@childrenshealthireland.ie

All referrals are triaged based on the clinical information provided.
Referrals that do not include relevant clinical details and/or prior treatment history will be rejected.

Infantile Haemangioma at risk of complications

Ulcerated lesions
Functional impairment (e.g. airway compromise, visual obstruction, feeding difficulties)
Significant cosmetic concern (e.g. nasal tip lesions, facial haemangiomas)
Lesions in the groin or perineal area
Nipple lesion in a female patient
> 5 Lesions
Midline lesions

Severe Eczema unresponsive to first line management in primary care
Skin Fragility
Tinea Capitis

Severe kerion with associated hair loss or systemic upset

Severe Scarring Acne

Nodulocystic

New rapidly growing lesion
Other presentations

Acne

Not responding to appropriate topical and systemic therapy
Associated with early scarring
Referrals will not be accepted unless a systemic therapy has been initiated, except in exceptional circumstances.

Moderate Eczema

Port Wine Stain

Facial involvement

Tinea Capitis

Not responding to treatment in primary care.

Alopecia Areata

50% scalp hair loss
