Dermatology FAQs

For safety reasons repeat prescriptions for medications will not be provided outside of clinic visits. Prescriptions for topical therapies should be renewed with your family doctor. Only GPs can renew medical card prescriptions.

High-tech medications are specialist treatments prescribed electronically by the Dermatology team. These should be renewed at clinic. Please remember to ask at your appointment if you need a repeat prescription. If phoning between appointments, please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for renewals due to prescription volumes.

For this prescription, you must include: patient’s name, date of birth, hospital number, PPS number, name of the medication, dose and how often, name and email of pharmacy. Please contact the dermatology admin team (above) to submit the request.

Investigations will be discussed with you at your child’s follow-up appointment, or earlier by phone if medically indicated.

We do not have capacity to provide phone advice between clinic appointments. Please contact your clinical nurse specialist for non-urgent advice. If your concern is urgent, or your child does not have a clinical nurse specialist, please contact your GP or local emergency department.

Email and phone queries are triaged and responded to accordingly.

Forms must be completed by your GP. Forms filled by us carry no additional ‘weight’ in an application. A letter of support can be provided, if appropriate. Please contact the dermatology admin team.

First you will check in at the reception desk, confirming your child’s name and details. You will then take a seat in the waiting area until called by the clinic nurse who will check your child’s weight and height. You will then take a seat in the waiting area until called by the doctor. All new patients are offered a full skin examination. You may also meet other members of the multi-disciplinary team (advanced nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, researchers, medical students), as required.

Often, children will required blood testing on the day of clinic, but not automatically. This will be decided by your child’s doctor.

By highly trained nurses in the phlebotomy department. Numbing cream and/or numbing sprays are available as required.
