Chest X-ray for TB Screening

Information for parents, guardians and children

Why is this screening offered?

Your child is a close contact of someone with tuberculosis (TB). Close contacts have a higher risk of developing TB. A chest X-ray helps detect TB early, so treatment can start quickly if needed. Early detection protects your child and others.

Benefits of the Chest X-ray

  • Detects TB early, before serious illness develops
  • Allows early treatment which is very effective in children
  • Reduces the spread of TB to family and friends
  • Provides reassurance when results are normal

Is the X-ray safe?

Yes. A chest X-ray uses a very small amount of radiation (about 0.1 mSv). This is much lower than everyday exposure from natural sources, and the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Possible Results

  • Normal: No signs of TB disease. Your child may still be offered TB preventative treatment.
  • Abnormal: Does not always mean TB. Further tests may be needed to be sure.

What happens on the day?

The X-ray is quick and painless and only takes a few minutes. A specialist doctor will review the image and discuss the result with you.
