Chest X-ray for TB Screening
Information for parents, guardians and children
Is the X-ray safe?
Yes. A chest X-ray uses a very small amount of radiation (about 0.1 mSv). This is much lower than everyday exposure from natural sources, and the benefits far outweigh the risks.
Possible Results
- Normal: No signs of TB disease. Your child may still be offered TB preventative treatment.
- Abnormal: Does not always mean TB. Further tests may be needed to be sure.
What happens on the day?
The X-ray is quick and painless and only takes a few minutes. A specialist doctor will review the image and discuss the result with you.
