World Down Syndrome Day (1)

Eamon with his mam Ella at CHI at Temple Street

This year, we are delighted to share the story of Eamon, a little boy whose bravery, resilience and joyful spirit have touched everyone who has cared for him. His mother Ella McCabe, have generously shared their experience to help raise awareness and encourage meaningful conversations around early supports, communication, and the needs of children with Down Syndrome.

Below is Ella’s story, in her own words.

Eamon spent most of the first four months of his life here in Temple Street. Born at 29 weeks with Down Syndrome, he had life saving bowel surgery at one day old. He loved the nurses and doctors so much that he likes to pop back in every now and again for outpatient and inpatient visits!

To us, World Down Syndrome Day is a chance to celebrate and be thankful for the lovebomb that is Eamon and all the people who have helped him on his way and also to raise awareness on important issues.

Many kids with Down Syndrome have feeding difficulties early on and feeding tubes are a vital part of helping them grow. However there's not yet a set pathway or guidance around helping kids wean off those tubes once they're home, so that would be a great development, and it might even prevent some of those kids needing extra surgeries later on.

We know it will take Eamon longer to say and understand words and that Down Syndrome kids are often visual learners. So Lámh or "Eamon's Language" as his sisters call it, has been so helpful to communicate with him. In Lámh you use simple signs paired with the key words in a sentence to help get your point across. There are posters around the hospital that show people some helpful Lámh signs - like "sore" or "medicine". If people do one thing for World Down Syndrome Day I would encourage them to look online at some of the great kids songs with Lámh in them and to learn a few signs so you too can speak Eamon's language:)

Find out more about lámh here.

At our clinic for children with Down syndrome at Children’s Health Ireland at Tallaght, every visit is about more than healthcare — it’s about partnership with families, support, and celebrating each child’s unique strengths and abilities.

Our multidisciplinary team works closely with over 420 children and their families, providing specialised care that supports health and development from infancy through childhood. The clinic allows families to access coordinated care in one place, helping ensure that every child with Down syndrome receives the support they need to thrive and stay healthy.

For our team, being part of this clinic is incredibly rewarding. We have the privilege of building long-term relationships with children and their families, watching them grow and develop. The joy, fun, resilience, and individuality each child brings to the clinic makes it a pleasure to be part of their journey.

World Down syndrome Day is an opportunity to celebrate our amazing children and their families.
