Why has my child been referred?

Your child has been referred to the National Paediatric Craniofacial Centre for assessment and treatment of a suspected craniofacial condition. These conditions can affect the soft tissues or bones of the face, head, and neck, including the jaws and skull.

First Appointment

At your child’s first Outpatient Department (OPD) appointment, you will meet some of the following specialists from our Craniofacial Team, who are experts in diagnosing and treating craniofacial conditions:

Consultants & Specialists:

  • Prof. Dylan Murray – Consultant Craniofacial, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon
  • Mr. John Caird – Consultant Neurosurgeon
  • Ms. Katie Geraghty
    Craniofacial Nurse Specialist
  • Ms. Noelle O’Mahony – Craniofacial Clinical Services Coordinator
  • Ms. Linda Comey – Craniofacial Administrator

Radiology (X-ray & Scans)

Your child may require a specialist X-ray or scan, such as a 3D CT Scan or MRI Scan, to confirm a craniofacial condition. If a scan is needed:

  • You will receive an appointment directly from the Radiology Department (Tel: 01 878 4265).
  • Once you receive this appointment, please notify the Craniofacial Office so we can arrange your child’s second OPD appointment to discuss the results.
  • Where possible, we aim to schedule both appointments on the same day.

Second Appointment

If investigations confirm that your child requires surgery, this will be discussed in detail at the second OPD appointment with the Craniofacial Team.

Appointments & Attendance

  • All appointment details will be posted to your child’s home address.
  • Please ensure we have your current home address, next of kin phone numbers, and GP details.
  • Check in at reception at least 10 minutes before your appointment.
  • We aim to see your child on time, but delays may occur due to urgent referrals or emergencies. You will be kept informed if this happens.
  • We appreciate your patience as we strive to provide the best possible care.

During this appointment:

  • The team will ask about your child’s birth history, development, and immunisation (vaccination) schedule.
  • A family history will also be taken.
  • Your child will undergo a physical examination.
  • Please bring the names and contact details of any healthcare professionals your child currently attends (e.g. Paediatrician, Physiotherapist) as the team may need to contact them after the appointment.

Your child may also need to see additional Healthcare Professionals, either at CHI at Temple Street or closer to home, including:

  • Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Surgeon
  • Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist)
  • Paediatric Dentist
  • Geneticist
  • Paediatrician
  • Psychologist
  • Speech & Language Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Social Worker
  • Clinical Photographer
