About the Radiology Department

Hello! Welcome to the Radiology Department at Children’s Health Ireland! We know you might be feeling a little nervous, but we’re here to make sure you feel safe and happy. Let’s learn about what happens when you come for a special picture of the inside of your body!

What Are X-rays and CT Scans?

Images radiology

Sometimes, doctors need to take a picture of the inside of your body to help you feel better. These pictures are called X-rays or CT scans. They use a special kind of energy called radiation just like how a camera uses light to take a photo!

Why Do We Need These Pictures?

  • They help doctors see if everything is okay inside your body.
  • They help doctors find out why you might feel sick or have a pain.

They help doctors decide the best way to make you feel better.

How We Keep You Safe

Who Says It’s Okay?

Before we take any pictures, your doctor and our special picture-takers (called radiographers) make sure it’s really needed. They write it down to keep everyone safe!

Other Ways to Take Pictures

Sometimes, we can take pictures without using radiation:

  • Ultrasound: Uses sound waves like how bats see in the dark!
  • MRI: Uses magnets like a super-strong fridge magnet!

But sometimes, an X-ray or CT scan is the best way to help you.

You’re in Charge Too!

If you have any questions or feel worried, just ask! We’re here to help you feel brave and happy!
