CHI at Tallaght Emergency Care Unit temporarily closes from 12:00am Friday 25th September to 8am Tuesday 29th September 2026; for emergency care for children, attend CHI at Crumlin Emergency Department.

CHI at Tallaght (ECU) Emergency Care Unit will temporarily be closing for four (4) days from 12:00am on Friday 25th September 2026 until 08:00am on Tuesday 29th September 2026.

Paediatric emergency care activity is redirected to alternative CHI services, with additional capacity at CHI at Crumlin and CHI at Connolly.

Tuesday 29th September 2026, 08:00am
CHI at Tallaght Emergency Care Unit scheduled to re-open for activity.

During the closure period, paediatric emergency activity will be redirected to the CHI at Crumlin Emergency Department, which will provide additional capacity supported by staff from CHI at Tallaght. The CHI at Connolly Urgent Care Centre will also provide additional capacity during the closure period.

Patient safety protocols are in place throughout the closure period. Appropriate arrangements are in place to ensure children and young people are safely directed to the most appropriate service, with access to the specialist paediatric emergency care provided by Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin.

Since opening in 2021, Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Tallaght has operated on the Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) campus, with its services supported by TUH network and information technology systems.

As CHI progresses towards the opening of the National Children’s Hospital Ireland (NCHI), CHI at Tallaght services are required to transition to CHI-supported systems and infrastructure. This will support the development of a more integrated model of care across CHI sites and facilitate the future transition to the Epic electronic health record system.

As CHI at Tallaght is located on the TUH campus and has extensive links with TUH services and systems, this transition is a complex programme of work. Careful planning is therefore required to ensure the transition can be completed safely and with minimal disruption to children, young people, families and staff.

To safely complete this IT systems transition, the Paediatric Emergency Care Unit (PECU), Outpatients Department (OPD), Fracture Clinic and Radiology services in CHI at Tallaght will temporarily close to patients and staff for a defined period.

The temporary closure will allow the necessary network and technology changes to be completed safely and efficiently. This work is also required in advance of planned changes to TUH's own technology platforms in early 2027.

When CHI at Tallaght ECU (Emergency Care Unit) reopens on Tuesday 29th September 2026, there will be a new digital infrastructure. This will allow for a more integrated model of care across CHI sites and facilitate the future transition to the Epic electronic health record system.
