Digital Health is the internationally recognised term used to describe the technology, systems, services, and expertise that support the delivery of modern healthcare across CHI. Rather than being solely focused on technology, Digital Health is designed to improve patient care by ensuring healthcare professionals have secure, reliable, and timely access to the information and systems they need. For patients, this can lead to safer care, better coordination between healthcare teams, improved access to health information, and a more efficient healthcare experience. By enabling clinicians to spend more time focusing on patient care and less time managing administrative processes, Digital Health plays a critical role in supporting better health outcomes.

Scope of the Digital Health Function

The CHI Digital Health function includes:

  • Clinical and non-clinical applications
  • Cybersecurity
  • Education and training
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR)
  • Infrastructure management
  • Research and innovation
  • Service desk support

Preparing for the Future Digital Health Environment

To support the transition to the National Children's Hospital Ireland (NCHI), the Digital Health Department has been undertaking a comprehensive review of its existing technology landscape. This work includes reviewing all current IT applications to assess their effectiveness, relevance, and future role within the new hospital environment.

The department is also evaluating which applications will be required to support future clinical and operational needs, ensuring that systems are aligned with the hospital's long-term objectives. A key focus of this work is assessing application requirements in relation to the new Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, helping to ensure that digital solutions are integrated, efficient, and capable of supporting high-quality patient care. Through this planning and evaluation process, Digital Health is laying the foundation for a modern, connected, and sustainable digital ecosystem within the NCHI.
