Back to school on a low protein diet
Recently, the Metabolic Unit in CHI at Temple Street held its first 'in-house' event since Covid for children who are due to start National School in September and are on a low-protein diet.
It was only been possible due to funds that have been raised by parents of children with metabolic disorders.
It was a fun-filled time for patients, their siblings and parents to meet and share experiences. We had patients with PKU and urea cycle disorders. In some cases, this was the first time parents had met other parents who have children with the same condition.
Niall O Dwyer the Magician from ‘Really Grand Events’ was a big hit with all the children, parents and staff!
Kim Clarke & Clara Sherlock (psychology assistants) along with Senior Clinical Psychologist Norah Jordon developed a fantastic booklet for parents/their child on what to expect when they start school.
Jill Moore (play specialist) helped entertain the children with crafts while Annette Lloyd (chef) from the diet kitchen kindly provided suitable food for all.
Many thanks to the organising committee: Anne-Marie Casey, Fiona Boyle, Jenny McNulty (Metabolic Dietitians), Jill Moore (Play specialist), Michelle O’Hara (CNS) Erika-Jane Cox (MSW), Kim Clarke & Clara Sherlock (Psychology Assistants), Norah Jordon (Senior Clinical Psychologist) and Dearbhla Milner (Dietetic intern).
