E-Scooters: Know the Risks and Keep Children Safe
E-scooters have become a familiar sight on Irish roads, but they also bring real risks especially for children. Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) are warning parents to be alert to the dangers, as injuries linked to e-scooters are on the rise.

News
“E-scooters are currently the leading cause of traumatic brain injury in children admitted to CHI, and that many of these injuries have been life changing for children."

Why e-scooters are a concern
- Children under 16 years are not legally allowed to use e-scooters in Ireland.
- Children’s Health Ireland has had serious cases, including head injuries and broken bones, often linked to a lack of protective gear.
- Some children have required emergency surgery after crashes, with lasting effects on their health.
The law in Ireland
Under current Irish road safety rules:
- 16 years and over only can legally use e-scooters.
- Speed is limited to 20 km/h.
- Scooters must be fitted with brakes, lights, bell, and reflectors.
- They can only be used on roads and cycle lanes not on footpaths.
How to stay safe
For those old enough to ride:
- Always wear a helmet – it can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 70%.
- Use knee, elbow, and wrist guards.
- Wear high-visibility clothing so you can be seen.
- No phones, no passengers, no shortcuts (footpaths are for walking, not scooting.)
Parents: Think before you gift
While e-scooters may seem like a fun present, they are not toys. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) strongly advises parents not to buy e-scooters for children under 16.
Our message
E-scooters can be useful and enjoyable, but only if they are used responsibly.
- Keep younger children off them.
- Make sure teenagers follow the law and wear the right gear.
- Every safe choice helps prevent a serious accident.
Together, we can reduce injuries and keep children safe.
