The annual Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers List recognises researchers who have made a major impact in their field. The rigorous evaluation process uses Web of Science Core Collection data and employs quantitative and qualitative metrics and expert judgement to select researchers.
Alan is a Consultant Dermatologist at Children’s Health Ireland and St James’ Hospital and a Professor of Dermatology in the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. His research has focussed on improving the lives of people with common and rare skin disorders. It has included studies on the genetic, environmental, and immunological causes of skin disorders and led to major discoveries such as identifying loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin gene as the major genetic risk for eczema. Alan is a highly cited researcher who has contributed to hundreds of peer reviewed scientific papers, including articles that have been published in high impact journals like Nature Genetics and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Throughout his career, Alan's research has been supported by the clinical research team at CHI and been generously funded by Children's Health Foundation, our fundraising partner.
“It is very rewarding to have this work recognised. It’s the sum of 30 years of collaborative work that has required the generosity of tens of thousands of patients, hundreds of brilliant scientific collaborators, and tens of millions in funding from charitable and government bodies. This work would not have been possible without that investment and belief from funders that we can make a difference to children’s lives through high quality research.
