Scheduled (Planned) Care

At Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), we know that coming to hospital can feel worrying for children, young people and families. We aim to make every visit as safe, supportive and comfortable as possible. Each child’s journey is different. Some may attend for a single appointment, while others may need tests, follow-up visits or a longer stay. Care pathways, waiting times and teams can vary across services. Your appointment letter will include specific details about your child’s care.

What is scheduled care?

Scheduled (planned) care is non-emergency care that is booked in advance, such as:

  • Outpatient appointments
  • Tests or procedures
  • Planned (elective) surgery

Appointment letters are usually sent up to six weeks before your appointment.

  • The consultant remains responsible for your child’s care

We will:

  • Explain what is happening
  • Answer your questions
  • Involve children and young people in their care

We try to run clinics on time, but delays can happen. Staff will keep you updated.

  • Recommend tests or treatment
  • Discuss a day case or inpatient stay

Parents, Guardians and Carers

  • A parent or guardian is usually expected to attend
  • There may be limits on the number of people attending

Please speak to staff if you need:

  • Sensory supports
  • Translation or interpretation
  • Any other assistance

Going Home

Before you leave, staff will explain:

  • Next steps or follow-up appointments
  • Any care needed at home
  • Who to contact if you have questions

Please ask if anything is unclear.

Cancelling or changing your appointment

If you cannot attend your appointment, please call the number on your appointment letter as soon as possible. This allows us to offer the appointment to another child who may be waiting. If your child still needs care, we will arrange a new appointment. If we do not hear from you and the appointment is missed, your child may be removed from the waiting list.
