Did you know there will be robots in the new hospital?

Robots and smart systems are playing a big role in how we care for patients and support staff in the new hospital. From keeping our spaces spotless to safely storing and delivering medications.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)

In the new children's hospital, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) primarily handle the transportation of materials and supplies, freeing up staff for patient care and other tasks. They will deliver items like meals, medications, linens, and waste, along with sterilised supplies, between different hospital departments.

Robots will support hygiene services

Cleaning Robots will be constantly on the move providing support to our staff

Keeping over 160,000 square metres clean with high ceilings, glass walls, and countless touchpoints is no small task. That’s why our Hygiene Services team will be supported by two clever cleaning companions:

  • Ecobot Scrubber 50
This floor-cleaning robot gets to work right on schedule, scrubs floors using programmed routes, stops for obstacles, and returns to base when the job is done. It’s a tireless team member that helps keep public areas spotless.
  • Window Buddy
Reaching those tricky high glass panels is a breeze with Window Buddy, a high-reach cleaning tool that ensures our bright, open spaces stay clean and welcoming safely and efficiently.

What about The Pharmacy Department?

The Pharmacy Department is also getting a digital upgrade.

Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) will be located across the hospital, just like they already are in Connolly, Tallaght, Temple Street, and Crumlin. These high-tech cabinets:

  • Use biometric access for safety
  • Provide secure medication storage
  • Monitor drug use and support inventory control
  • Include backup power and flexible setups for any ward

Meanwhile, the central pharmacy will rely on the Pharmacy Automated Dispensing System (PADS) – a robot that helps pick and restock medications automatically. That means less manual handling, better stock accuracy, and more time for clinical teams to focus on patients.
